HOW TO USE GOOGLE WEBSITE OPTIMIZER

Google Website Optimizer is a tool that can help a blogger or a website owner to improve the effectiveness of your website . In GWO, you may choose what web pages or parts of a page you'd like to test. Then create an experiment and run. GWO collects all data, analyzes and reports about what can be done to improve the performance of your blog or website. Testing by creating an experiment in GWO, will never hurt your Search Engine Rankings.

FREE DOWNLOAD

Improving Online Conversions for Dummies explains how you can make sure your ads show on searches that are most likely to convert into sales.

Planning an Experiment

After you’ve signed into Website Optimizer you can start creating your first test. Here’s what you need to have ready:

  • URL of your A page you want to test.
  • URL of your B page with the different content you want to test.
  • URL of your conversion (or Thank You) page.

Create the experiment.

1. Click ‘Create a New Experiment’. Please note that Google Website Optimizer offers two kinds of tests: A/B testing (sometimes referred to as split testing) and
multivariate testing. If you want to test the entire design or look and feel of
a page and have a smaller amount of traffic, then select ‘A/B testing ‘. If you want to run a test across your entire site and want to test many combinations, then select ‘multivariate testing’

2. For bloggers, I suggest to select ‘A/B Experiment’. Read through the checklist, tick the checkbox and click ‘Create’.

3. Name the experiment and identify pages. Give your experiment a descriptive name to help you identify it quickly. Paste the URLs of your test page, alternate page, and conversion page into the settings of the experiment. If you have more than one alternate page you want to test, click ‘Add another page variation’.

After you’ve entered the URLs of your pages, GWO does a quick check to make
sure the pages exist. When that’s done, click ‘Continue’ to move on.

Install and validate JavaScript tags.

Website Optimizer uses small snippets of JavaScript code in order to show different variations. You need to add the JavaScript tags to your test pages: Control Script that determines what variation that visitor sees, Tracking Script that keeps track of which variation a visitor saw regardless of whether the visitor converted or not. or Conversion Script that keeps track of all conversions for the experiment.

Launching the Experiment

Once your experiment pages validated , then you can launch your experiment. Before you launch, you need to preview the experiment and then Click on Start the experiment.

Understanding Data and Reports

The test reports shows either green, red or yellow bars, in  pages that have different content. The variation pages in green color are absolutely  better than the original pages but with red bars are not. If a variation has a yellow bar then there is no definite conclusions can be drawn and you need to wait for more data to come in.

Final Action

Depending upon the amount of traffic your page receives, the complexity of your experiment, and the difference in conversion rates for your combinations, the duration of your experiment may vary. If your test page have good traffic, less complexity, and non similar conversion rates then the experiment will finish quickly. After analyzing the report, you can decide whether to do another follow up experiment or no.

TOP TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS

500px-Xmas_tree_animated

1. Know how much you have to spend and stick within your budget.

It can be great to have a legitimate reason to spend money - provided you are not building up trouble for the next six months. Guilty spending is no fun. And guard against the temptation to buy favour. If you have been neglectful for the past 11 months, your incongruence will be quickly spotted.

2. Get out of your own skin when choosing presents.

How often do you buy things for other people, because you would like the item for yourself? If it is for a close family member, who is this gift really for, you or them? You know those times when you found something that really worked. You became as excited about giving it, as the receiver might feel receiving it. Getting absolutely the right gift is a sign of true understanding and acceptance. Ask yourself, "What would this person really like to see when they remove the last piece of wrapping?" "What would light up their face? And what wouldn't?!"

3. Wake up out of your Christmas trance and choose to change your patterns.

What are your Christmas patterns? Are you the one that does all the cooking or gets landed with all the tidying up? Is it down to you to arrange all the social events and invite people round to your place? Do you always go on the 10 mile walk, get involved in carol singing, or making special visits? Or is your preferred pattern one of getting drunk as often as possible, over eating, staying out all night, falling out with people, avoiding people? Are you the Martyr, the Couch Potato, the Hostess, the Scrooge, the Party Gadfly, the Benefactor? Do you like yourself? Do your patterns leave you feeling good about yourself? Consider if you would rather have or how you would rather be, and come up with at least 5 alternative options. This could be the best present you have ever given yourself - and maybe to others around you.

4. Know in advance what you are prepared to do, and what you are not prepared to do.

Often time spent over Christmas undertaking activities you loathe at worst, and just about tolerate at best? The festive period is notorious for bringing out the "oughts and shoulds", and you find yourself called upon to follow an ancient set of prescribed rules. Compromising yourself over Christmas is a recipe for resentment and ill will - not just for yourself, but for others as well. Check out who is setting the rules, and what might be the consequences of not following them. You can then decide to comply or not. A congruent yes or no, will let others know where they stand, and let them make plans accordingly. Time won't be wasted try to persuade you differently.

5. Mentally rehearse specific events - the Christmas Dinner, the visit to your in-laws, the trip to the Amusement Park.

Look at the event from the eyes of everyone involved. Be aware of the pitfalls and the pleasures. Have contingency plans - if just how to manage your state should things go wrong. Ask yourself "What's the worst thing that can happen, and what would happen if it did?" Notice what is within your control, and what else you can influence. Everything is outside your control and so let it go and accept it. More stress is caused by the fear of what might happen, as opposed to what actually happens.

6. Take a new look at the system you are in.

Christmas is a time when families come together, sometimes for the first time since last Christmas. It is amazing how one minute you are a mature adult, holding down a responsible job, and the next minute you find yourself reacting to your sister/brother/father/mother as if you are still that 10 year old. Then you feel annoyed, or pathetic that it's happening again. The family system can trigger old patterns and knee jerk reactions. The strange thing is you'll find other people responding differently, if you do something different. If you don't lock horns, they will have to find a different response. You will no longer feed off them, or vice versa.

7. Rethink the things that annoy you.

When we get annoyed, it is because we believe that things should be different, or that they/it made us respond like that, or they wouldn't have said that if they didn't mean XY or Z. These are examples of what we are believing: about them, about what is right, or about how people ought to behave. Do these beliefs enhance your sense of wellbeing? Do they leave you feeling good? Which ones could be more useful? Remember, to misquote Eleanor Roosevelt - "No one can wind you up without your permission." Take a moment to notice the meaning you are giving to the behaviour and ask yourself "What else could this behaviour mean?" "When could it be really useful?" You could even become curious about what has to be happening for them, for them to behave like that. This way you give yourself the opportunity to respond differently to that "typical present", "typical remark" or "typical response."

8. Be aware of what you really enjoy about Christmas festivities.

Take the time to make a list, and remind yourself what is so good about each of them. They may evoke bygone memories; they may pleasurably fill your senses, or they may give you a sense of fulfilment, excitement, or compassion. It might be choosing gifts for certain people, wrapping your presents, hearing the Christmas music on the radio, going to parties, wearing special clothes. It might be experiencing the rituals of religious observance. As you become aware of each of them, relive them with all your senses, so that you will recognise and relish them when they actually arrive. This will help to counter balance those other moments, which you have chosen to tolerate.

9. Build in exercise to balance out the eating and drinking.

Make sure you get outside and give yourself some fresh air. There is so much socialising going on indoors, so much on the telly, that your system can do with a break outside - even if you are not naturally an outdoors person. Arrange to go on a walk, see if you can leave the car behind, clear the garden. And know that dancing the night away is a great way to burn off the calories.

10. Consider this to be the first Christmas of its kind.

If you are expecting history to repeat itself, it probably will. If you have a sense of inevitability that things will go badly, then it is likely you will have a hand in making it happen. Often when we believe that such a thing always happens, or so and so never does what you want, or everyone takes you for granted, then you will find yourself looking for evidence to support this thinking - completely missing all the evidence that might say otherwise - the times when things didn't happen, or what did go well, or when you were appreciated. Start noticing what is different. Start noticing what you are doing differently. How you are thinking differently. And if you find yourself slipping into old habits, let this be a signal for you to do something completely differently.

Have the Christmas that you make for yourself.

Best Wishes to You All

BLOGGING SECURITYMany people now a days are very serious about blogging and even picked it up as there profession but at the same time few tend to forget about the security issues concerned with blogging. Have you ever thought that if you have a high traffic blog which if of good income source to you and one day it get compromised or hacked then....!!! So in this post I will illustrate few security tips for bloggers.

Note:This post is mainly for people having there blog on www.blogger.com and www.wordpress.com platform.

1.Phishing and keylogging Threats:

a) These two are the most hyped tricks used by attackers these days so no need to explain these. While logging in always make a habit of typing the url in the address bar.

b) Always avoid accessing your blog dashboard from public computer cafes because you never know a keylogger may be planted.I advice the readers to use an firefox addon called "Keyscrambler" or a software called "Zemana Anti-logger" for safety.

2. Session Hijacking Threats:

Recently you must have come across "Firesheep" addon for firesheep, its simple but a killer one.By session hijacking one may access your account even knowing your password but by trapping the session cookies.

Countermeasure:

a) Use SSH Socks proxy for encrypting your sessions by setting up a ssh server and accessing it through a client. This is called as SSH tunnel. If you have Linux or mac installed in your box its really easy to do so but for windows users you can use cygwin to setup a SSH server using a free software openSSH

b) Always use SFTP instead of FTP especially for your self hosted wordpress blog.

c) Donot access your blog dashboard in public or open wifi network like coffee shop, airport etc.

d) define('FORCE_SSL_ADMIN', true); copy this code to the wp-config.php file(for wordpress only)

e) Can also use wordpress secret key option in wp-config.php(for wordpress only)

3. Backup

Always keep a backup of the blog posts and database because you never know someone may hack into your account and delete all your post.

4. Strong Password

It is advisable to change the password of the account at least 2-3 times in a month. The password should be at least of 10 character and must be the combination of special characters(#,@...etc),numbers(1,2,3..etc)and characters so,that it will be hard to guess.

5. Update and hide the version ( For Wordpress only )

a) Always use an updated version of Wordpress because some attacker may exploit the vulnerability of the old version and get access to your blog.

b) Also donot forget to hide the version shown in between <head></head> tag of the source code. You can do this by this simply adding remove_action('wp_head', 'wp_generator'); to the function.php of the theme.

6. Restrict indexing by search engine ( For Wordpress only )

a) You can restrict the search engine to index certain files and folders so that they are not available publicly to attackers by using dorks.Just use "Disallow:/wp-[desired folder]" in the desired folder so that it will not be indexed. For example:Disallow: /wp-admin.php or Disallow: /wp-login.php etc.

b) Never put the login page link in the footer of the blog as many bloggers do.This makes the work of the hacker easy. For more details regarding this read (http://www.askapache.com/seo/updated-robotstxt-for-wordpress.html)

7. Security for wp-admin folder,wp-content folder,wp-config.php using .htaccess file(For wordpress only)

a) Wp-admin folder:

-This is one of the important folder so you need to harden it very well.

Take a text file and copy the below code with your Ipaddress to restrict the ipaddress access.

order deny, allow

allow from 192.168.78.1 (Your Static IP Address)

allow from 192.168.78.3 (Your Static IP Address)

deny from all

-If you are having a dynamic ipaddress then you an use this plugin to provide a password and username to the folder

(http://www.askapache.com/wordpress/htaccess-password-protect.html),this is if you are on apache.Check this out for more details (http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/howto/auth.html)

b) Wp-content folder:

-This folder mainly contains images, themes etc so there is no harm if we restrict this folder, which can be done by using the below code with in .htaccess file in the folder.

Order Allow,Deny

Deny from all

<files ?\.(jpg|gif|png|js|css)$? ~>

Allow from all

</files>

c)wp-config.php :This file is also very important as it is the key file for the database

<files wp-config.php>

Order deny,allow

deny from all

</files>

It is also advisable to restrict the browsing the contents like plugins etc we can do this by copying "Options All -Indexes" to the .htaccess and putting it in the root folder.

8. I would like to point out that, If you are using a gmail id for blogger account, then do not share it with any of your friends or put it in your contact page of your blog or put it in "from:" email id section in Feedburner etc. So even if your secondary email id is hacked you will not lose your blog.

ADSENSE APPROVAL WEBSITES – IS THIS A SCAM TARGETTING BLOGGERS?

Google AdSense is a free program that help online publishers to earn revenue by displaying relevant ads on online content, through websites, blogs, online software, search results etc. Adsense is proved to be a most accurate, simple, trustful program that is now a days biggest financial support for many bloggers, including me. Recently Adsense improved its performance through New Adsense Interface, which is giving more accurate data to analyze visitors and click ratios.

Adsense approval websites -  is it a Fake?

While surfing through internet, I have seen some websites that are offering help or assistance in getting approval for Adsense. I am quite surprised reading the details. As far as I believe, Adsense is a free program for all real and sincere Bloggers or website owners who adhere with the policies of Google Adsense. Me any many of my friends got approval after changing blogs according to the policy guidelines and standards of Google Adsense publishers. Even after getting approval we did verification steps and following all standards of a good Adsense publisher.

This is what surprised me that, some websites claims that they give Adsense accounts upon payment of money or buying some of their products. I feel this is quite impossible. When I search in Google Adsense help forums, I never find such a mentioning that Google allowed somebody to sell or give approval for an Adsense Account. So my readers and all other bloggers, please be careful while selecting such services.

If these services are Fake, then I appeal Google to take strict action on such fake people who are trying to steal money from poor bloggers like us.

My readers, if these services are fake, please don’t hesitate to share this message through all possible mediums like Facebook, Twitter etc.

The pictures of some of such websites are given below. Readers may please contact Google Adsense before trying any of such services by paying money.

TWITTER BIRD MAY DIE IN 2015?

Twitter, the micro blogging service, started its operation in the year 2006. The growth after Twitter's origin was tremendous and today twitter is being used by many corporates, individuals and bloggers as a medium of short and hectic communication. Do you ever wonder how twitter is making revenue? How twitter is maintaining the operational cost? Recently we had a small discussion and analysis about what is going on behind Twitter.

How Twitter manage maintaining costs till 2010?

Twitter was believed to be successful in raising over US$57 million from venture capitalist growth funding. This money was pumped into Twitter over three installments within the first three years.  Institutional Venture Partners and Benchmark Capital, Union Square Ventures, Spark Capital and Insight Venture Partners were some among the major financing sources.

LIKE THIS POST?twitter-bird-5

How Twitter planned to move further?

Twitter was actually created as a long term investment. The idea behind offering everything free with Twitter was to attract users and to establish the new idea of short messaging service as a monopoly of Twitter.

Twitter was successful in creating 190 million accounts, ( not visitors ) within this short period of time. But many programs like “Revtweet”, started making and sharing  money out of Twitter using automated advertisements through active twitter accounts. This created immense automated tweets dumped on most twitter accounts. Regular twitter users went into trouble in identifying useful tweets.

On April 13, 2010, Twitter announced plans to offer paid advertising for companies such as  that would be able to purchase "promoted tweets" to appear in selective search results on the Twitter website, similar to Google ‘Adwords'.  This was a brave step to boost the revenue for Twitter.

What could be the killer of Twitter?

Twitter is beleived to have 190 million accounts as of today. Unfortunately 2.1% are dead accounts, 14% fake accounts, 62% irregular login, 12% regular login and 9.9% are one time login (these accounts never opened after they were created-hoping that these accounts may login at any time). This statistics shocked us, and we decided to go for further analysis.

  • 2.1% dead accounts, are due to forgetting the password , account deletion due to violation of terms, and physical death of account holder.
  • 14% fake accounts are created by Twitter account marketing people to sell Twitter followers. These accounts have no revenue value for twitter.
  • 62% irregular login, is due to the influence of other social media networking sites. At the time of its creation, Twitter was not facing any major competition. Twitter spend two years to make Tweeting as a popular action among internet users. Once, Tweeting became popular, then new services like Google Buzz, Google Wave, emerged and Facebook gave more visible importance to short messages. Several other services changed their pattern similar to Twitter. this high competition prevented many real users to stay away from logging into Twitter.
  • 12% regular login accounts can be very smaller account number while considering the invested amount on Twitter.
  • 9.9% are one time login accounts, in which they fear to use twitter due to privacy leak or less knowledge of irregularly updating Terms and Conditions.

Twitter remained very slow in loading when compared to some other services.

The policy of Following or Unfollowing creating a lot of confusion in account holders.

There is no way of making money with a Twitter account otherwise I had to join in some other programs that may violate the Twitter policies resulting in an account ban.

Lack of more services inside Twitter. Other services like Buzz, Waves and Facebook are offering Short messaging, email, video sharing, picture sharing and much more in a single platform.

10 ideas that could save the life of Twitter

  1. Keep an account active as long as possible. Never put hard rules and suspend an account on the name of Terms and Conditions.
  2. Respect privacy of an account holder. Give more privacy options.
  3. Shift Twitter to new faster loading servers. Establish servers in different countries and establish  accounts on local twitter domains.
  4. Enable Transliteration for more languages that may help Tweeting more funny in local languages.
  5. Include more services like Email, Games etc that pushes an account holder to login.
  6. The most important service is a revenue sharing option for an account holder. Twitter may develop a PPC or PPP ( pay per video play) as an advertisement option.
  7. Enter into an agreement with Google, to display Adsense advertisements in Twitter accounts. Use most possible spaces in a Twitter account. Keep two area to display ads, in which Twitter can display their own advertisement or Twitters Adsense account and in the other allow the account holder to display his/her own Adsense account advertisements. Then share the revenue with the account holder.
  8. Remove all restrictions in follow or unfollow. Let an account holder to follow or unfollow as many accounts as he wants. This process is similar to a Game, in which a user love to increase his followers. The more he stay in his account, the more Twitter earns.
  9. Another suggestion is to introduce credit system by setting a Clean Behavior Pattern Credits for  users. This will give value to an account, based on the account behaviour in internet. That means this value is derived from number of login, number of followers related to the key word, less spamming , tweeting pattern etc.
  10. Allow users to sell or but a Twitter account.  Clean Behavior Pattern Credits will be the benchmark for estimating value of a Twitter account. Twitter may open an electronic exchange similar to stock exchange where people can sell or buy their own accounts. Transacting through Paypal, Twitter may  maintain a pool account for account holders who wish to sell or buy their accounts. Twitter can charge a nominal amount on each transactions.

ADD LINKS IN YOUTUBE VIDEOS AND MAKE MONEY

I have seen in YouTube that many videos shared got much visitors than a blog, by specific key words they use accidently. These immense visitors have great potential in generating money. Before, there was an option in Google Adsense to link Youtube videos with Adsense accounts and generate money by the clicks accumulated on it. Now Google Adsense removed that option and showing Google’s own advertisements. With all respect on Google’s own program, I would like to state that visitors always love to click on advertisements, if displayed attractively.

IMPROVE YOUR ALEXA RANKING TO BOOST TRAFFIC

Alexa is a web information company that crawls and audits all blogs and websites to announce a traffic based ranking system. Depend upon the traffic of a blog or website, Alexa gives ranking which can be used as an excellent tool to determine the popularity of a blog or website. As Alexa says in their website, “ The traffic rank is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources, and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.

ALEXA RANKThe main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site's current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.”

How to improve Alexa Ranking:

There are different ethical ways to improve the Alexa ranking. As we read above, the ranking is based on the data collected by the Alexa. So these ways are pointing towards submitting more accurate data to Alexa about our site.

Install Alexa tool bar

Installing Alexa tool bar is an optional step. But doing like that helps to provide Alexa about more data regarding the website or blog. The number of views through Alexa tool bar will be counted while rank updating and so encourage your friends also to install Alexa toolbar. There are Alexa Tool bar extensions available for various browsers like Google Chrome, Firefox etc. You can get it in Alexa website. The funny matter is that, your Alexa Ranking will improve each time you visit your own blog through a browser that has already installed with Alexa toolbar

Take an account in Alexa and Submit your URl for crawl

Even though it is not essential to take an account in Alexa, I feel better to do like that and then Submit your URL to Alexa bots to crawl.

Install Alexa Widget in your blog or website

Alexa have many traffic analysis widgets which you can display in your blog. You may select the one that is similar to one displayed in this blog. This help to make a link back to Alexa which is useful in getting more frequent crawling of Alexa bots on your blog.

So what improvement you got in three weeks? Write to us for some secret methods to improve.
